I'm trying to get the vm_local_rpio="1" thing running, I've no PANIC messages, but the MIC is in perpetual "testing" mode and like you, disappears randomly (I'd say, once the RE has had enough of testing the MIC without it going up properly). I'm gonna ping my local Juniper reps to see if this is still a valid method with the latest vMX images.
Otherwise, we may have to boot both vcp & vpfe for having a functionnal forwarding plane.
